How long is a decade?

A decade is traditionally seen as a period of time equal to 10 years.

The word, “decade”,  is derived from the Ancient Greek word “dekas”, which means a group of ten. For example, you could say Mary and Mike were married for a decade (decade refers to 10 years).

Whereas a decade is measured as a period of 10 ‘years’ a century is a measure of 100 ‘years’. Two centuries is 2 hundred years.

A period of 5 years is called a lustrum.

A period of 50 years is called a ‘jubilee’.

What does a decade describe?

A decade can be used for any ten-year period that ends during that time period..  This can relate to anything, including how long a person has lived or grouping of years within a western calendar.

It can also be used to refer to a period of time, usually in history.   For example, the 80s (1980s) which lasted from 1980 to 1989.

How long is a decade in minutes?

There are 5,256,000 minutes in a period of 10 years, if you always assumed 365 days a year.

However, you need to look at the decade that you are looking at.  If you looked at the period 2000-2009, then 2000, 2004, and 2008 would be leap years. That’s an additional 3 days.  The total minutes would therefore be 5,260,320.

If it was 2001-2010, you would have 2 leap days. Total of 5,258,880 minutes.

However, you must also consider that every 400 years there is no leap day on years ending in 00 that begin with a non-multiple of 4, such as the years 1800, 1400, 1000, 600.
